Outreach Ministry at St. John'sWelcome to St. John's Outreach Ministry

Our mission is to “respond to the needs of all by living the message of the Gospel through outreach to each other and to the community at large.”

The Outreach Ministry seeks to:

  • Revitalize the faith of the active Orthodox Christians
  • Reach out to inactive Orthodox Christians
  • Reach out to those inquiring about the Orthodox Faith
  • Support and promote programs that reach out to the community at large especially those in need

INQUIRING MINDS

  • Icon of JesusChurch School: Preschool to Grade 10 in the church school rooms immediately following Holy Communion from September to May.
  • Diocesan workshops and retreats are offered at local parishes on various topics as announced.
  • Adult Education: 6-week Bible Study and/or Theology Book Study typically offered in Fall and Spring as announced.
  • Self-Study: St. John’s pamphlet racks offer brochures and pamphlets on many topics for inquiring minds. There is also a limited selection of books to borrow from our parish library.

ORGANIZATIONS AND MINISTRIES

Organizations and Ministries

  • Altar Servers - The teams are typically comprised of boys in grades 3 to 10. Altar server assistants are graduates or men whose ministry is to continue to serve in the altar.
  • Assistance Fund – This fund provides assistance to parishioners in need through private request to the pastor.
  • Choir - The choir enriches our worship experience through their ministry of song. All parishioners are encouraged to share their talent as a member of the choir.  
  • Church School – Enrolled students from preschool to grade 10 participate in an Orthodox Christian Education program immediately following Holy Communion from September to May.
  • Executive Board - The Parish Council or governing body of St. John's has several committees (such as Stewardship) that support its goals.
  • Fellowship of St. John the Divine - The Fellowship develops, funds, and runs a variety of programs for the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese.
  • Greeters Ministry – This ministry promotes a welcoming atmosphere at St. John’s by greeting all those who attend the Liturgy and personally following up with visitors to parish.
  • Order of St. Ignatius – The Order serves to promote the teachings of our Lord, Jesus Christ, financially support the Archdiocese through a lifetime commitment and to enhance the spiritual commitment of its members. 
  • Outreach Ministry – This ministry reaches out and responds to needs of the community at large as well as to each other in the parish
  • Parent Guild - The Guild supports church school activities through fundraising and provides family functions including occasional parent workshops and retreats.
  • St. John of Damascus Dedham Food Pantry Ministry – Parishioners volunteer during scheduled times to serve those in need at Dedham Food Pantry as well as regular food collection.
  • Teen SOYO – The youth group provides fellowship opportunities for teens while serving the church and the community
  • Virgin Mary Society (VMS) - The “Ladies Society" of St. John's support the work of the church through various programs locally and nationally.

CHARITABLE

St. John’s supports charitable programs include (but are not limited to):

  • Al-Kafaat – A foundation that provides for handicapped children and adults in Lebanon
  • Angel Tree – Christmas Gifts for needy children in the Dedham area
  • Assistance Fund – assistance for parishioners in times of need
  • Coat Collections for needy families in the local communities
  • Food for Hungry Program (Archdiocese Program)
  • IOCC –International Orthodox Christian Charities
  • Special Collections for people afflicted by natural disasters or other needs
  • St. Innocent Orphanage in Mexico – special collections of supplies by Church School Program
  • St. John’s Dedham Food Pantry Ministry
  • Veterans – special collections of supplies and letters by Church School Program

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH

  • Family Outreach Cards can be completed by family members for follow up by the Outreach Ministry and placed in the Outreach Box in the vestibule.
  • Outreach packets, which include informational brochures about the Orthodox Faith and our church, are being provided to nearby colleges as a resource to students.
  • IN THE WORKS: Welcome Packets are being developed to provide to newcomers who have recently moved to nearby communities.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

  • Family Outreach Sunday with Church Organization and Ministry Booth Fair. This coffee hour and booth fair is tentatively set for Sunday, October 6, 2013 immediately after church.
  • Virtual Church Tour – under construction
