Letter from the Church School Director

September 2024

Welcome back to Church School!

We are pleased to announce that St. John of Damascus Church School classes will begin for all students in grade Preschool (age 2.5) through grade 10 and up on Sunday, September 15, 2024.

Our overarching theme will once again be “fellowship and friendship” which is so important as we grow in Orthodox Christianity! The staff are busy working on curriculum development at each grade level, and we strive to create a well-rounded, comprehensive Church School program through which our children can come to know the faith, and to know God Himself. This year we will do a deep dive into the gospels of Luke and Acts, focusing on how we walk with Jesus as our guide.

Our classes begin immediately after Holy Communion. Children will be dismissed from their pews into the Communion line, and then will proceed directly to their classrooms. Adults will be ushered into the Communion line after all children and Church School staff have gone, so that we may start our program as quickly and smoothly as possible. School will be in session until noon each Sunday.

Our program cannot be carried out without your support! We rely on you to reinforce and enhance what your children learn in class. If you need any help with expressing your faith to your children, please contact Fr. John or any of us and we will be happy to assist you.

It’s never too late to bring your kids to Church School. All are welcome anytime even if you’ve been away for awhile!! We have an amazing staff of devoted, creative folks who are passionate about instructing and inspiring St. John’s students.

With love in Christ,
Your Church School staff
Nancy Close, Director and our wonderful teachers - Bob Kurker, Brian Hazerjian, Joan Teebagy, Carol Hazerjian, Bertina Kurker, Rachel Hazerjian, Dianne Mercado and Tori Sabbag

Attendance Reminder

In order for children to benefit from our Church School program, regular attendance at the Divine Liturgy and in class is essential. The continuity provided by weekly attendance makes it possible for students to understand, appreciate and embrace our Orthodox faith.

All students who have attained at least 50% attendance during the school year will be awarded a certificate of completion and will be eligible for other awards at graduation.

If you have questions regarding your child's attendance record, please contact us.
